The CW’s ‘Supergirl’ To End After Its Upcoming Sixth Season

The CW has gained in popularity due to its lineup of superhero shows based on the iconic characters from DC Comics including Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, Black Lightning and Stargirl. One particular superhero show that has stayed on top of the The CW lineup is Supergirl. Created by Greg Berlanti, Ali Adler and Andrew Kreisberg, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as the title character, as she protects her city from outside threats, both alien and human. The show originally premiered on October 26, 2015, on CBS before permanently moving to The CW for its second season. The series has managed to entertain its audience with its storytelling, action and characters. The show has gone on for five seasons, with its last season unfortunately being cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It seemed that Supergirl would be able to continue for a long time in the foreseeable future. However, many fans were shocked when it was announced on September 23 that the show would end after its sixth season.

This announcement came as a surprise to many people, as the series did not seem to be setting up an ending to its long running story during its last season. However, it is not very hard to see why this is happening as of now. The fifth season of Supergirl had the series’ lowest ratings. Under 700,000 people watched each episode live. In addition to this, a new show on The CW that focused on Superman and Lois Lane was announced to be in the works, and it was unlikely that the network would present two superhero shows that focused on characters from the Superman mythos. With the debut of HBO Max and its announcement of DC shows in the works, there were already seeds of doubt planted that the show would continue for much longer, especially when it was the least watched DC show on The CW.

Supergirl is the second Arrowverse show to be canceled, following Arrow which ended with its eighth season on January 28, 2020. Even though Supergirl is supposed to end soon, Benoist has promised that the show will end on a high note and the sixth season will very much be worth it.
