The CW’s ‘Riverdale’ Prepares For 5-Year Time Jump Next Season

The CW’s Riverdale will undergo a five-year time jump next season, skipping all of the characters’ college years.

“We’ve been talking and planning on doing a time jump,” executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told TVLine. “And of course, usually time jumps happen in between seasons, because there’s a tease at the very end.”

Season four of the show ended last week, but it was cut short because of the coronavirus pandemic. The original last three episodes of the season weren’t finished after filming halted once someone on set was tested for COVID-19 in March. So, the last three episodes of season four will be the official first three of season five, and reportedly they will include Riverdale High’s prom and graduation. Then, the fourth episode will show the jump five years in the future, with the characters as young adults.

“So what we’re doing is picking up right where we left off for the first three episodes, and then ding a time jump … after those three episodes,” Aguirre-Sacasa said.

Riverdale isn’t the first teen drama to skip over the college years. One Tree Hill famously did the same in 2008.
