Over 300 items worth a total of $200,000 were reportedly stolen from storage during the filming of season five of Netflix’s The Crown. They were being held in a truck parking lot in the town of Mexborough and were stolen last weekend while the crew was filming. South Yorkshire police and production staff for the series confirmed the theft.
Publication Antiques Trade Gazette first profiled the crime and implored local antique store managers to watch out for thieves attempting to sell the items. These included 19 sets of candelabra, a replication of the 1897 Imperial Coronation coach egg designed by Fabergé, a dressing table set, and a huge amount of glassware.
Set director for The Crown, Alison Harvey, told the Gazette, “The items stolen are not necessarily in the best condition and therefore of limited value for resale. However, they are valuable as pieces to the U.K. film industry.” Netflix confirmed that despite the significant number of props stolen, “there is no expectation that filming will be held up.”
The fifth season of The Crown will see Imelda Staunton take reign as Queen Elizabeth II after Olivia Colman delivered an acclaimed performance as the monarch in the series’ third and fourth seasons. The season will also star Dominic West as Prince Charles, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Phillip, and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana.
