The series is a historical drama about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and recasts its main actors every few seasons to account for the shifts in the time period. The late monarch has been played by Claire Foy and Olivia Colman and Staunton will now take over for the seasons exploring her later years.
Other new cast members for this season include Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki who are playing aged-up versions of King Charles III (then Prince Charles) and Princess Diana. Jonathan Pryce is also taking over the role of Prince Phillip, first played by Matt Smith and then Tobias Menzies.
