While the famous duo, Alex Pall and Drew Taggart, originally formed in 2012, it did not do a live performance until 2014. Before this, The Chainsmokers recorded many remixes and made several collaborations. In September 2014, the band’s first live performance was as the opening act for Timeflies at Terminal 5. The Chainsmokers’ breakthrough song, “#Selfie,” was originally released as a free download in December 2014. In January 2015, Dim Mak Records re-released the single, and it was streamed to Republic Records. “#Selfie” achieved international success and even peaked on the Dance and Electronics Songs chart.
The Chainsmokers are known for releasing singles rapidly for its fans to enjoy. In total, the band has released three studio albums, five EPs, 19 music videos and 35 singles. Hits include “Roses,” “Closer,” “Don’t Let me Down” and “Something Just Like This,” which was a collaboration with the band Coldplay.
On the other hand, 5SOS are often referred to as a boy band, compared to the likes of One Direction, although each member of the band plays their own instrument. The band consist of members Luke Hemmings, on lead vocals and guitar, Calum Hood on bass guitar, Michael Clifford on guitar and Ashton Irwin on drums. Additionally, all the band members sing backing vocals.
The band rose to fame in much the same way many young stars have found fame recently: through the magic of YouTube. In 2011, the four friends started posting videos of themselves on Hemming’s YouTube channel. A cover they recorded of Chris Brown’s song “Next To You” received over 600,000 views.
