‘The Big Short’ DVD Review: Great Cast Tells Tale Of Financial Crisis

The Big Short discusses the true story of fraud in the big banks of Wall Street. No one was ready for what happened in 2008 besides a few of the main characters in this film.

The financial crisis is what Michael Burry (Christian Bale) had predicted all along. Yet, no one wanted to listen. People thought he was crazy for betting on something that has never happened before. He knew the mortgage banked security was corrupt and expected the crash only within a few years later and it happened.

Mark Baum (Steve Carrell) has his own fund on Wall Street. He likes finding the dirt and tearing apart the corruption.

Jared Fennett (Ryan Gosling) of Deutsche Bank is the one who informs Baum of the options of credit default swaps. Fennett is probably the funniest character within the film with his arrogant attitude and hilarious lines as narrator.

Jamie (Finn Wittrock) and Charlie (John Magaro) are a young duo who start Brownfield Fund. With the help of their friend and ex-banker, Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt) they get in on the action of betting against the mortgages.

With little knowledge of the inner workings of the financial world, The Big Short can be a little confusing at times. Wall Street itself is complicated. When thrown into the story, you have to pay close attention to the connections.

Director Adam McKay places light-hearted scenes with real life celebrities like Selena Gomez and Margot Robbie who explain certain industry terms like CDO and subprimes.

The movie explains and enlightens the audience of Wall Street and its various outlets of corruption.

DVD Extras: McKay and the actors comment on the film and its story in “The Big Leap” featurette. Producer Jeremy Kleiner talks about McKay and how “his films are outrageous and anarchic and chaotic but they also have a very clear structure.”
