Last week, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) rescued two children who were found alone on the side of the Rio Grande. The official CBP account posted an image on Twitter of the children, an infant and a two-year-old girl in the middle of branches and bushes. The Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol tweeted, “It is heartbreaking and frustrating to know that there are children being abandoned without remorse or concern for their lives and wellbeing.”
A note found with the children confirmed that they were siblings from Honduras. The children were recovered safely and did not need medical attention. The location of the parents is uncertain at the time.
Although Twitter users were glad the children were safely rescued, many chimed in to criticize the Chief’s message as “patronizing.” One Twitter user responded, “How judgmental of you. Without remorse or concern for their well-being? You have NO idea. I’m sure the decision was heartbreaking for parents. How about showing you’re a compassionate human?”
