A Tennessee woman who hasn’t cut the back of her hair for more than three decades has earned a Guinness World Record title for the world’s longest mullet for a female.
Tami Manis, the Knoxville, Tennessee, native’s hair was measured at five feet and eight inches long. This makes the mullet hair even larger than Manis herself. She keeps the front and sides of her hair short but hasn’t cut the back since February 9, 1990.
A public health nurse, Manis was inspired by a girl in the music video for Til Tuesday’s “Voices Carry” to grow a mullet.
“The girl had a rattail and I really wanted one of those,” Manis told Guinness World Records.
Before her world record certification, Manis won several awards for her mullet, including a second-place finish in the “femullet” category. Shortly after, she learned that the Guinness World Records had a category for the longest-competitive mullet, which she applied to see if she qualified. Manis described the application process as long and tedious, but once the certification came to her home, she felt it was worth it. Her mullet will be in the 2024 edition of the book.
“When I opened it, I thought, ‘This is amazing.’ I confirmed it with the gentleman from Guinness World Records and then I reverified that I’m actually in the 2024 edition of Guinness World Records for the longest mullet and that is pretty amazing!” Manis said.
Manis has said that most people don’t recognize how long her mullet is until she turns around, where she describes her mullet as a “party” in the back. She has an extensive hair health routine, which involves Hask products and Argan oil-infused conditioner.
