Two suspects were arrested for threatening to bomb one of Taylor Swift‘s Austrian concerts this week.
The men, ages 17 and 19, reportedly planned to drive a bomb-filled car into the crowd to kill “as many people as possible.” They had both been hired to work security at the event and were the reason for the cancelation of three sold-out Eras Tour shows.
Investigators claim the suspects had been radicalized online by ISIS and planned to kill crowd members with explosives and machetes.
“The suspects actually had very specific and detailed plans… to leave a bloodbath in their wake,” Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said during a news conference.
“I understand very well that those who wanted to experience the concert live are very sad,” he continued. “Moms and dads are looking after their daughters and sons, who were full of enthusiasm and anticipation for this concert. But it’s also important in such serious moments as now, it’s inevitable that safety comes first.”
The older suspect reportedly quit his job on July 25 and told those around him he was planning “something big.” He confessed to the attack plans and had previously pledged allegiance to the Islamic State’s leader. The 17-year-old had just been employed by the venue a few days before his arrest and was harboring material related to ISIS and al Qaeda in his home.
Despite major success, the Eras Tour has not been without its setbacks. In June, a man was charged with voyeurism after attending a show in Scotland, following threats from another man who was charged with stalking and intimidating Swift in Arizona.
