Taylor Swift touched on her string of famous exes in her cover story for Rolling Stone magazine and revealed that she hasn’t dated in a year and a half.
In the interview, Swift, 24, opened up about her upcoming pop record, 1989. The album marks a big shift for Swift, who has made the album completely devoid of her native country genre. Another sign of change for the songstress is the lack of songs about ex-boyfriends – at least, a lack of obvious ones. Previously, many of Swift’s hits were believed to be about high profile exes – “Dear John” is believed to be about ex John Mayer, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (and a majority of the songs on Red) is rumored to be about Swift’s romance with Jake Gyllenhaal.
“Different phases of your life have different levels of deep, traumatizing heartbreak. And in this period of my life, my heart was not irreparably broken. So it’s not as boy-centric of an album, because my life hasn’t been boycentric,” Swift admitted.
Swift went on to hint that she has not dated since her short-lived romance with One Direction’s Harry Styles, and attributes her decision not to date, in part, to an attempt to change how her love life is spoken about in the press.
“I feel like watching my dating life has become a bit of a national pastime. And I’m just not comfortable providing that kind of entertainment anymore. I don’t like seeing slide shows of guy’s I’ve apparently dated. I don’t like giving comedians the opportunity to make jokes about me at awards shows,” Swift said, no doubt inspiring many to conclude that she is still not over the joke Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made about her dating habits at the 2013 Golden Globes.
With fewer exes to write songs about, Swift has found other enemies to call out in song, particularly a fellow female artist. In her new song “Bad Blood,” Swift sings about another artist who Swift claims “tried to sabotage an entire arena tour” by hiring people working for Swift. “For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?’”
Swift says she now steers clear of the artist in question, and made it clear that the conflict was professional, not personal. Fans have already combed over Swift’s statements, and the artist in question is rumored to be Katy Perry. Perry herself appeared to confirm the rumor with a vague tweet referencing Mean Girls, seemingly suggesting Swift was similar to the film’s antagonist, Regina George.
That being said, Swift reportedly hinted that more than a few songs off 1989 were written about her most recent ex, Styles. In fact, one such song is titled “Style.” “We should have just called it ‘I’m Not Even Sorry,’” Swift admitted.
