Taylor Swift has hit back at Scooter Braun, the owner of the Big Machine record label, after he sold her master recordings to a private equity company for over $300 million. Swift claims that Braun then tried to push a nondisclosure agreement on her that would silence her protests over the sale of her recordings.
After Swift left Big Machine for Republic Records after completing her six-album deal, Big Machine was sold to Braun, manager of Kanye West and Justin Bieber, in 2019. “My musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it,” Swift told The Guardian.
Swift vented her frustration on Twitter this week with screenshots of an essay regarding Braun’s alleged actions against her wishes with a caption that read, “Been getting a lot of questions about the recent sale of my old masters. I hope this clears things up.”
In the letter, Swift alleges, “Scooter’s team wanted me to sign an ironclad NDA stating I would never say another word about Scooter Braun unless it was positive. I would have to sign a document that would silence me forever before I could even have a chance to bid on my own work … He would never even quote my team a price. These master recordings were not for sale to me.”
Swift said that she will rerecord her records under Republic in order to regain some semblance of control.
