Last June, 11-year-old Naomi Oakes was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia, and the brave girl chose “Bad Blood” by her favorite singer—Taylor Swift —as her battle song. On July 5, Oakes’ parents posted a video (below) on YouTube telling her story, which revealed that the type of cancer their daughter has involves being hospitalized for six to nine months—meaning that will not be attending Swift’s concert in Phoenix, Ariz., on Aug. 18 with her best friend. In the video, her loved ones asked for Swift to share #TeamNaomi on her Instagram, however, the popular singer did something ever better.
Two days after the video was posted, Swift, whose own mom is also battling cancer, donated $50,000 on the Go Fund Me page set up by her uncle Brandon Adams, to raise money for her medical expenses. “To the beautiful and brave Naomi, I’m sorry you have to miss it, but there will always be more concerts. Let’s focus on getting you feeling better. I’m sending the biggest hugs to you and your family,” Swift wrote on her young fan’s page along with a donation, which exceeded the initial $30,000 her family was asking for.
On Tuesday, Adams posted a video of his nieces reaction to Swift’s donation and message. “I can barely breathe,” said Oakes, who was very emotional while reading the message.
