Taylor Swift called out President Donald Trump on Twitter on Saturday for his recent treatment of the United States Postal Service, after the service told 46 states that it cannot guarantee that the ballots sent in will be delivered in time to be counted.
“Trump’s calculated dismantling of USPS proves one thing clearly: He is WELL AWARE that we do not want him as our president,” the singer tweeted. “He’s chosen to blatantly cheat and put millions of Americans’ lives at risk in an effort to hold on to power.”
The USPS has been struggling to deliver mail on time after cuts were made in June when Trump asked the new Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to make the service more profitable. Trump has also said that mail-in voting would increase fraudulent voting, though that claim is baseless. During a press conference Thursday, Trump admitted that he is keeping funding from the USPS in order to make voting by mail harder to achieve.
In another tweet, Swift urged her followers to send in their ballots early: “Donald Trump’s ineffective leadership gravely worsened the crisis that we are in and he is now taking advantage of it to subvert and destroy our right to vote and vote safely. Request a ballot early. Vote early.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had recommended mail-in voting as a way to curb the spread of coronavirus.
Earlier this week, the USPS began removing mailboxes from street corners in some cities before receiving so much backlash that they pledged to stop taking down mail boxes for the next 90 days.
