Empire star Taraji P. Henson says that happy that the charges against her co-star Jussie Smollett, were dropped and that “truth prevailed.”
Prosecutors dropped all the charges against Smollett, who was indicted last month for allegedly orchestrating a January 29 attack on himself, during which he was physically assaulted by two men in a racially motivated attack.
“I’m happy that the truth has finally been set free, because I knew it all along,” Henson said in a statement. “We’re all happy for him, and thank God the truth prevailed.”
Henson along with the rest of the Empire cast, have mostly kept quiet about Smollett in the last few months, when he went from victim to alleged mastermind of the attack. Yet, Henson never believed he was capable of such a plot.
“When I know someone, there’s nothing you can say to make me flip on them, and that’s what we miss in this world, said Henson in a statement. “We need people that stand by us. Whatever happened to that? Why are we so easy to believe strangers over people we know?”
“I’m not going to jump on clickbait just because someone says something derogatory about a person I know and love,” Henson added. “I’m not easily swayed like that. Those little clickbait [reports] weren’t enough to deter me from his immaculate track record. I know the type of activism this young man does in his community, I know that he’s a giver — he’s not an attention-seeker.”
Smollett’s case was dismissed after he forfeited a $10,000 bond and agreeing to perform service to the community.
