Taiwan's Yellow Duck Bursts On New Year's Eve
The giant yellow duck that’s been floating from city to city through Taiwan, tragically burst on New Year’s Eve while it was on display at the island's Keelung Port.

The duck had been resting in the water of Keelung City Harbor for the last 11 days, following stops in Kaohsiung City and Taoyuan. Reaching 18-meters high, the moving art installation called Rubber Duck, had been constructed by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman.
One theory as to how the duck met its demise suggests that an eagle clawed at the inflatable sculpture, causing a puncture that led to its deflation. Another theory, posed by a meteorologist, indicated that the unseasonable sunshine that followed a number of cold and rainy weeks altered the internal pressure and forced the duck to burst.

Keelung City Council Speaker Huang Ching-ta offered an apology to those who’d been looking forward to seeing the Hofman’s duck upon the water. "We want to apologize to the fans of the yellow rubber duck," Huang Ching-ta told reporters. "We haven't found the cause of the burst. We will carefully examine the duck to determine the cause."

Huang Ching-ta also revealed that a new inflatable duck would be making its way to Keelung and could be inflated as early as Saturday.
Prior to making its way to Taiwan, the duck art had taken up residence in Beijing after spending two months in Hong Kong. It has also had stints in Osaka, Sydney, Sao Paulo and Pittsburgh.
