Téa Leoni Opens Up About Divorce From David Duchovny

Téa Leoni is breaking her silence on her divorce from fellow actor and longtime husband David Duchovny.

Téa Leoni Talks Divorce

Leoni and Duchovny, after going back and forth with separations and reconciliations, finally decided to call it quits, filing for divorce back in June. While the couple cited “an irretrievable breakdown of the relationship” as the cause for the split, Leoni claims that despite the deterioration of their marriage, she’ll never be able to hate Duchovny.

"Listen, David gave me the two greatest gifts on the planet; I don't know how I could ever hate him,” Leoni, who has Kyd Miller, 12, and Madelaine West, 15, with the Silicone Valley star, told Parade. “We've always loved each other, and we adore these kids."

In their divorce filing, Leoni and Duchovny agreed to have joint legal custody of their children, with Leoni having primary physical custody.

Leoni is quick to point out that she’s not looking at their relationship post-divorce through rose-tinted glasses. She admits it's not easy, but that her and Duchovny’s shared love of their kids will drive them to make the situation, such as it is, work.

"I'm not playing stupid—I understand feelings can get hurt and things can get icky,” says the Madame Secretary actress. “We've had our moments like that. But these kids are too important, and he feels the same way. I know it," the actress says. "He's a good guy."

On a lighter note, Leoni noted that she and Duchovny have already managed to put a stop to their kids’ attempt to take advantage of the split. "There was that brief moment when the kids said, 'Oh, I can work a scam on you here and him over there,'” explained Leoni. “And we were like, 'News flash—no!'"

For Leoni, not only is it important for her children to maintain a strong relationship with their father, but also with their grandparents – which is one reason she’s happy that Madame Secretary is filming in New York City.

"L.A. is good for like four days, and then you've gotta get out. I wanted my kids close to my parents and David's mother,” says Leoni. “I wanted them to get to know their grandparents. I was very close to mine."

Leoni married Duchovny in 1997. In 2008, after it was revealed that Duchovny had a sex addition and he entered rehab, the two separated. They briefly reconciled before legally separating in 2011.
