After a years-long court battle, T.I. and Tameka “Tiny” Harris won their lawsuit against toy company MGA Entertainment. In it, they claimed the company violated the intellectual property rights of their music group, the OMG Girlz.
A jury awarded the pair a massive $71 million after their trial wrapped up on Monday, finding that “L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G. dolls” infringed on the band’s trademarked dress and misappropriated the name, image and likeness of the all-female group that T.I. and Harris formed in 2009.
On Monday, Harris shared her delight after the court battle ended with a favorable victory.
“We did this for the city. We did this for the culture. It was a fight. It was a hell of a fight,” Harris said in an Instagram Live video outside of a Santa Ana, California, federal courthouse.
The duo’s complaint against the toy company included side-by-side images that hoped to show how each OMG doll was based on a certain member of the OMG Girlz—Zonnique Pullins, Bahja “Beauty” Rodriguez, and Breaunna “Babydoll” Womack.
The OMG Girlz members testified at the trial. Throughout the case, T.I. and Harris accused MGA of marketing seven dolls that were seemingly identical to the clothes the group wore at “very public events.”
MGA maintained that they had done everything correctly, claiming consumers would not mistake their toys for the band.
After their big win, Harris spoke about the massive award.
“I mean, wow. They did more than I thought they would,” she said. “I would have been happy with whatever. They blessed us more than beyond. We wanted to thank the jurors so bad, but we didn’t get the opportunity.”
