During an appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival for his documentary Sly, Sylvester Stallone looked back at his career that has now spanned half a century.
He appeared on the red carpet with his wife, Jennifer Flavin, who just a year ago filed for divorce. The couple reconciled a few months later.
The actor talked about his two most iconic characters: Rocky and Rambo.
“I can do Rocky until I’m 100 years old because there’s so many different stories. He doesn’t have to fight in the ring,” he told the Toronto Sun. “There are so many fights in life.”
His attitude towards Rambo, however, was the opposite. “Rambo, I could leave him. He’s done pretty much, even though they want to do another one, but what am I fighting? Arthritis? It’s the truth,” he cracked.
Sly, which closed the festival Saturday night, looks back at his career and his life story to become one of Hollywood’s most iconic actors.
Stallone recalls that since he “wasn’t making it is as an actor,” he decided to write screenplays, which he didn’t like at first, but then kept going.
Stallone also gave advice to young actors, telling them to approach a role as if it’s their last. “I say, ‘You better look at making films as if you have ten bullets.’ Everyone has got to hit a target … that’s the biggest thing I try to pass on now. I say, ‘Pretend this is your last film. Would you be this sloppy? Would you be this casual?’ That’s how I look at it now. I look at every scene as my last scene,” he observed.
Stallone has seen a slight career resurgence for his television role as Dwight Manfredi in Tulsa King. Stallone plays a mafia capo forced to relocate to Tulsa after being released from prison. He then sets up a criminal organization. Stallone has received positive reviews for his performance.
Sly is set to be released on November 3, 2023.
