Syfy, apparently confident that Sharknado 2: The Second One will slay in the ratings even more so than the original, has already ordered a third installment of the B-movie franchise.
Syfy confirmed that they’d green-lit a third Sharknado movie Wednesday to Adweek. As of yet, the network hasn’t worked out a title or confirmed if any of the stars – including Ian Ziering and Tara Reid – would be returning for the next movie, which will come out in summer 2015.
Sharknado: The Second One recently wrapped up filming in New York City – changing the scenery from the original’s Los Angeles. Ziering and Reid were returned to the cast, and were joined by newcomers Mark McGrath, Andy Dick and Vicia Fox. Judah Friedlander, Kelly Osbourne, Judd Hirsh and Biz Marke will make appearances as well. Today hosts Matt Lauer and Al Roker also filmed cameos.
Although no details have been released about the third movie, it should be expected that it will retain the franchise’s signature dose of kitsch. As director Anthony C. Ferrante explained earlier this year, with a movie called Sharknado, you can’t have the film taking itself too seriously.
“You're making a movie called Sharknado and if you don't embrace it you end up with a movie that's not fun," Ferrante said at NBC Universal’s Summer Press Day.
Sharknado 2: The Second One premieres on Syfy Thursday, July 30 at 9/8c.
