Susan Boyle, who shot to fame with her audition for Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, recently revealed that she’s been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome.

Susan Boyle: 'I Have Asperger's'

Throughout her time in the spotlight, Boyle was thought to have been born with a learning disability. Prior to her career-launching turn on BGT, she’d only held one job and had been referred to by peers at school at “Susie Simple.” Sensing that her early diagnosis wasn’t accurate, she sought another opinion.

"I was told I had brain damage. I always knew it was an unfair label," Boyle told The Observer. "Now I have a clearer understanding of what's wrong and I feel relieved and a bit more relaxed about myself."

“I have Asperger’s. It is a relief,” she added. “Asperger's doesn't define me. It's a condition that I have to live with and work through, but I feel more relaxed about myself. People will have a greater understanding of who I am and why I do the things I do."

Boyle's Meltdowns

Some of the “things” Boyle, 52, may have been referring to are the “meltdowns” witnessed by onlookers that made their way into the media. In one such incident in 2012, Boyle reportedly swore at fellow customers at a Burger King, crying that she wanted to go home. In the past, Boyle’s reps had stated her surprising behavior was due to having difficulty dealing with fame. After this incident, a friend offered that Boyle is “not able to express her emotions as many would.”

Boyle, whose IQ is above average, expounded on her trouble communicating in her recent interview. “I never know if people are genuine," she said. "I would say I have relationship difficulties, communicative difficulties, which lead to a lot of frustration. If people were a bit more patient, that would help."

Boyle recently released her fifth studio album Home for Christmas. Her debut album I Dreamed a Dream sold 8 million albums worldwide; it was the fastest-selling UK album of all time.
