The Supreme Court announced on Wednesday that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been hospitalized due to a surgery on a bile duct she was given last year. The surgery is said to be “minimally invasive” and Ginsburg is set to be released from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York by the end of the week.
The Supreme Court released a statement that said, “Justice Ginsburg underwent a minimally invasive non-surgical procedure today at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City to revise a bile duct stent that was originally placed at Sloan Kettering in August 2019.”
It went on, “According to her doctors, stent revisions are common occurrences and the procedure, performed using endoscopy and medical imaging guidance, was done to minimize the risk of future infection. The Justice is resting comfortably and expects to be released from the hospital by the end of the week.”
Ginsburg, 87, is currently the oldest justice on the Supreme Court. Ginsburg revealed earlier this year that she is enduring her fourth battle with cancer as she is undergoing chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer. Ginsburg was first diagnosed with cancer in 2009.
Ginsburg’s health is under close watch as the 2020 presidential election is approaching and either Donald Trump or the newly elected president will be prompted with picking any new justices. Ginsburg has given no indication of if she plans to step down.
