In the race to dominated the Smartwatch market, Samsung has recently unveiled the Gear 3, a meatier follow-up to the Gear 2 Smartwatch. More durable and with a longer battery life and LTE cellular radio (phone pairing not required), the latest wearable tech product packs as many features into a watch that may turn off an entire demographic due to its size.

On the surface, the Samsung Gear 3 looks like an analog watch; that’s the point of course, as Samsung stresses that this Smartwatch hides its tech features below the look, feel and control of an authentic watch, with the time visible on an always-on mode. Aesthetic options start with the device body, which comes in a high-performance, muscle-car look with the Frontier, and the slimmer, more athletic metal design with the Classic. If this description sounds like a VH1 show, that’s also the point. Samsung recently revealed that because the majority of smartwatch buyers (around 80 percent) and early-adopters are men, the company was okay with the bulkier, 46mm diameter design and 1.3-inch display. The result is a device that is without-a-doubt geared more towards a male audience, with the aesthetics to match.

Demographics aside, the Samsung Gear 3 totes some impressive features. The body has enough space to include GPS, and the watch also has 4GB of storage and 768MB of RAM. In keepin with the “true-watch” philosophy, the Gear 3 has IP68 ingress rating, making it safe for up to 30 minutes in up to 1.5 meters of water. The Tizen OS operating system limits the number of apps available for the device, but is especially designed to benefit wearable tech. Those into customization have myriad ways to customize the clock face, and wristband come in a variety of shapes and colors. The Gear 3 comes with the standard steps tracker and heart rate monitors in most basic fitness bands, and the built-in mic and speaker will allow you to take calls. Improved battery function allows for up to four days between charges, and future updates will include integration with smart home devices.
