Super Mario Run was ceremoniously shown back at Apple’s keynote event. It was a big milestone, too. Nintendo’s iconic mascot was finally entering the world of mobile gaming!

Super Mario Run will be free to download, with the free version providing a sample of all three game modes. Players who want the full experience can pay $9.99 to unlock the complete game. Super Mario Run will hit the App Store next month, on Dec. 15.

Those of us who own Androids will have to wait a bit longer, but Mario’s latest side-scroller is right around the corner for those who prefer iPad, iPod or iPhone devices. Your machine’s firmware will need to be updated to at least iOS 8.0 to play Mario’s newest adventure, and 151 territories will receive access to the game.

Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Doug Bowser, acknowledged the history being made:

“The wait is almost over for a Super Mario game that can be played on mobile devices. Developed under the direction of Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Super Mario Run brings a new take on the series’ beloved action-platforming gameplay to iPhone and iPad for the first time.”

Nintendo also released an introductory trailer to help explain Super Mario Run, which can be seen below:

My stance on Super Mario Run hasn’t changed since it was first revealed. I’m still eager to play it, and I trust Nintendo and DeNA will provide a fun title. Smartphones aren’t an ideal platform for platformers due to their lack of buttons, but I expect Mario will accommodate these limitations with grace to deliver a new Super Mario experience.

In the meantime, if you’d like another point of view, one of my friends at Source Gaming is skeptical if Mario’s upcoming game will prove to be a smashing success.

Are you looking forward to Mario’s first mobile foray?
