'Super Fun Night' Series Premiere Recap: Rebel Wilson's Kimmie Tries To Get Over Her Stage Fright At Gay Bar
Super Fun Night, Rebel Wilson’s television debut sitcom, premiered Wednesday night and introduced viewers to three BFFs homebodies who vow to make Fridays “super fun night.”
Critics have been less than kind to the new comedy, on which Wilson serves as star, producer and writer. After critics panned the original Super Fun Night pilot, ABC made the decision to air the second episode as the premiere.
The new series premiere, titled “Anything for Love,” opens with Kimmie (Wilson), a newly promoted lawyer. Kimmie is an awkward girl trying to prove herself as an adult in her new job. She has a crush on a Brit, Richard (Kevin Bishop), who works in her office and also happens to be her boss’ son. She is also a complete and total nerd.
Kimmie and her roommates/BFFs Marika (Lauren Ash) and Helen-Alice (Liza Lapira) go out to a gay bar with Richard and, by some twist of fate, Kendall (Kate Jenkinson), Kimmie’s rival at work and with Richard.
The girls are all weary of going out, so they choose the bar strategically: Kimmie can use the opportunity to sing karaoke and overcome her fear of singing in public while super shy Asian Helen-Alice can relax around all the gay men.
Fighting with Kendall for Richard, Kimmie ends up engaging her rival in a sing-off. Unfortunately, her fears get the best of her and she faints onstage. With the help of her drunk friends, Kimmie gets back up on stage to perform a larger than life version of – what else – “I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” by Meat Loaf.
This ‘super fun night’ is a big success: Helen-Alice is afraid of putting herself out there and taking risks, but manages to end up ridiculously drunk, and Kimmie does get over her fear of singing in public, even if she has to faint to do it.
Super Fun Night airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. on ABC.
