Sunil Tripathi's body was pulled from a river in Rhode Island on Tuesday. The Brown student, who was falsely fingered by internet sleuths to be one of the Boston Marathon bombers, had been missing since April 16.
"For more than a month our community has sought to support the Tripathi family in their courageous and tireless efforts to search for Sunil," Brown University President Christina Paxton said on Thursday in a statement to the Brown University community. "We extend our deepest condolences to Sunil's family for their loss and for the immeasurable pain they have endured during this period."
The body was deemed to be that of the 22-year-old Ivy Leaguer after a forensic dental examination, Dara Chadwick, spokesperson for the Rhode Island Department of Health told ABC News. Chadwick also stated that they've yet to determine an official cause of death, but Providence Police Department spokesperson, Lindsay Lague told the news outlet, "There is no foul play suspected."
When the online community began playing detective after the bombings at the Boston Marathon, it was mistakenly suggested that Tripathi could be one of the suspects. Reddit GM Erik Martin apologized on Monday for the misinformation that sprung from the website. In a statement, Tripathi's parents called the experience "painful" and stated that they'd, "known unequivocally all along that neither individual suspected as responsible for the Boston Marathon bombings was Sunil."
"This last month has changed our lives forever, and we hope it will change yours too," they added. "We appreciate the coverage and support, but at this time, we ask for privacy for our family and for our love for Sunny."
