Stuart Scott, the longtime ESPN anchor who had been battling cancer for a number of years, died Sunday morning. He was 49.
Scott was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 and had been fighting it ever since, undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. His passing was announced by ESPN.
Scott first joined ESPN in 1993 for the sports network’s launch of ESPN 2. He went on to make the jump to ESPN and host its popular SportsCenter program. During his lengthy stint on ESPN, Scott coined a number of oft-repeated catchphrases, including “Boo-yah!” and “cool as the other side of the pillow.”
“He didn’t just push the envelope,” sports radio host and former ESPN anchor Dan Patrick told ESPN of Scott. “He bulldozed it.
On July 16 at the annual ESPYS, Scott was presented with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. In his memorable acceptance speech, he said, “When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.”
Scott is survived by his parents, O. Ray and Jacqueline Scott; siblings Stephen Scott, Synthia Kearney and Susan Scott; daughters Taelor, 19, and Sydni, 15; and girlfriend Kristin Spodobalski.
