Stone Temple Pilots Sue Former Frontman Scott Weiland

Stone Temple Pilots have filed a lawsuit against Scott Weiland, the former lead singer of the San Diego rock band.

The group wants to keep Weiland from using the Stone Temple Pilot name, or songs that were made famous by the group in the furthering of his own career. They’re also accusing him of trying to sabotage their newest single, “Out of Time.”

Back in February, Stone Temple Pilots fired Weiland from the group. “Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland,” a statement by the band read. Weiland had not been aware that the rest of the band members were plotting to remove him from the group, learning about it through the statement. He went on to tell Rolling Stone, “Not sure how I can be `terminated’ from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that’s something for the lawyers to figure out.”

When news of the lawsuit found Weiland, he took to his official website to address the situation. “First of all they don’t have the legal right to call themselves STP because I’m still a member of the band,” he wrote. “And more importantly, they don’t have the ethical right to call themselves Stone Temple Pilots because it’s misleading and dishonest to the millions of fans that have followed us for so many years.”

The Stone Temple Pilots were a popular grunge band of the 90s. Their biggest hits include Grammy-winning “Plush,” “Interstate Love Song” and “Vasoline.” After splitting in 2003, the band reunited in 2008 for a tour and went on to release a new self-titled album in 2010.
