Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ Debut Date Announced

Stephen Colbert will take over the Late Show following David Letterman‘s coming departure on Sept. 8.

Stephen Colbert’s Late Show Debut

“I have nine months to make a show, just like a baby,” Colbert said in his announcement about his Late Show debut. “So first, I should find out how you make a baby.”

CBS boss Nina Tassler added that Colbert and his team are still in the very early stages of figuring out what the Late Show will look like with him as the host.

“They’ve actually just moved into their offices. They’ve just started working,” Tassler said, adding, “He will have music on the show. He said, ‘I have to be entertaining as my guests,’ so he’s going to have guests on the show. Whether or not he’s going to start with a monologue, he’s working on that right now. Clearly he knows that he’s introducing himself, the real Stephen Colbert to his audience.”

“He’s really putting a lot of attention on making sure that the show is still topical and still relevant,” she continued. “There will be parts that will be traditional, and there will be things he wants to do differently.”

It was announced last year that Letterman’s last night hosting the Late Show would be Wednesday, May 20. CBS has not announced how they’ll deal with the stretch of time without a Late Show host until September.

On CBS’ other late night show, The Late Late Show, Into the Woods actor James Cordon will kickoff his run March 23, taking over for Craig Ferguson.
