The Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer debuted on ESPN during Monday night’s football game.
The trailer glimpses characters such as Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).
The trailer starts with a single, ominous piano note and a shot of Rey as a scavenger, investigating an abandoned ship. “Who are you?” a disembodied voice asks as the camera switches to a shot of Rey trekking across sandy dunes alongside BB-8. “I’m no one,” Rey answers, although we know this isn’t true.
Next, we get a glimpse of the stormtroopers, and then Finn, explaining his dilemma. “I was raised to do one thing,” he says, “but I’ve got nothing to fight for.” He stands atop a sandy hill, looking across the desert.
“Nothing will stand in our way,” a darkly clad Kylo Ren says, peering out into a bright, red horizon. “I will finish what you started.” We catch a glimpse of a charred Vader mask.
The trailer then shows images of TIE fighters and the Millennium Falcon flying about, lasers flying. We hear that Rey and Finn aren’t entirely certain the stories they’ve heard about the Jedi are real, but Solo assures them, “it’s true, all of it. The dark side, the Jedi, they’re real.” Then, Leia speaks. “The Force, it’s calling to you. Just let it in.” We glimpse a number of other intense action scenes, as well as Leia herself being consoled by Solo.
Ticket sales skyrocketed the moment the trailer came out, and fans took to social media to express their joy.
