Captain, some minor spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery are on the horizon!
For the season four finale of Star Trek: Discovery, Georgia gubernatorial candidate and voting rights activist Stacey Abrams got to step into a massive fictional office: The President of United Earth.
In her appearance on the show, Abrams delivered a message of unity by revealing that Earth had rejoined the Galactic Federation. Show executive producer, writer of the finale episode script Michael Paradise told Deadline, “as we started to look ahead to the finale, we realized we are going to need a face for this moment, someone to represent Earth.”
The show’s team quickly learned that Abrams was a diehard Trekkie and was more than willing to play the part. In fact, her only demand was that she didn’t get spoiled on any part of the show’s fourth season outside her scene. Paradise said, “She wanted to be able to just watch it and enjoy when the show finally came out. So, yeah, we avoided all the spoilers.”
The show’s star Soniqua Martin-Green said the whole cast and crew “were fanning out the whole time, just trying to cover it up, trying to be cool. We adopted her so fast. We were like, ‘You’re Star Trek family forever now.'” Martin-Green said Abrams “knew exactly how to be and where to go and everything,” while shooting. She later learned that Abrams was experienced in stage acting after attending a performing arts magnet high school and doing theater at Spelman College.
Abrams will not be pursuing a full-time acting career anytime soon, though. She announced on December 1, 2021, that she would be running for governor of Georgia for the second time in the 2022 midterm election.
