SPOILERS: Writers, Director Talk 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' Plot Twist

Kristen Stewart prepared audiences for the ending of Twilight: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 when she told Jay Leno that it was "shocking," but no one quite expected the long battle sequence that wrapped up the world of Bella Swan (Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) — much less the fact that it would be revealed to only be happening in Alice's head, and that no death or destruction would actually come to our favorite characters.

But the culminating scene of the final installment to the Twilight Saga was not always in the cards. "Stephenie [Meyer] and I were up in Vancouver at a steak house — I remember very, very clearly," screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg said of the night they decided on the ending.

"She was still trying to decide if she wanted Breaking Dawn to be a film because she was very concerned [about] how do you do that ending?" revealed Rosenberg. "In the book, the ending is very much a very tense confrontation, but it's resolved in the conversation, and of course, for a film that is a very challenging place to be. So both of us were trying to figure out how do we make that cinematic? It's just that back and forth, and the idea hits — wait a second, it's all happening in Alice's mind. It's actually referred to in the book, we just don't see it in the book. So the beauty of film, you get to see it."

And the promised battle scene also had quite a bit to do with director Bill Condon coming on to direct the project. "When I got involved that was already in the treatment, and I don't think I would have made the movie if it hadn't been there because I think it was a great, great adjustment to the book," he said. "And it's still true to the book, you know, because there is a reason for it happening and it doesn't change the outcome of what happens."

So, rest assured, even if you've heard that sweet characters Carlisle Cullen (Peter Facinelli) and Jasper Hale (Jackson Rathbone) get ripped to shreds in the film, it won't be for long. As soon as Alice (Ashley Greene) opens her eyes, it's all over and everyone returns safely home to live out their happy lives.
