The new animated feature by Disney, Wreck-It Ralph, starring John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch, Alan Tudyk, Mindy Kaling, and Ed O'Neill, is getting video game fans of all ages excited, as it caters to the 80s and 90s video-gamer just as much as the modern variety, spanning a couple generations of gaming tropes and traditions.
Wreck-It Ralph transports viewers to an arcade-like world in which the video game characters are real and so are their problems. Titular character Ralph (Reilly) is an old-school video game villain in a Donkey Kong-style game who vows to turn the virtual world on its head and become a hero, despite his destructive programming and lumbering form.
The result is a kind of Toy Story-premise-meets-Tron-philosophy, all wrapped up in a dazzlingly colorful package that is friendly for kids and carries the traditional message that, at the end of the day, you can be whoever you want to be.
Ralph eventually ends up in a first-person shooter game far more similar to the ones kids grow up with today, and that's where Lynch comes in as a the intimidating (but sexy) super soldier, Sergeant Tamora Jean Caloun, reports E! Online.
Be on the lookout for the voices of a star-studded cast, a 12-step program for video game baddies, and a never-ending string of old and new video game homages and cliches that even the most incidental fan will recognize.
Wreck-It Ralph, directed by Rich Moore of Futurama and The Simpsons, opens today in theaters.
