SPOILERS: 'The Walking Dead' Ends Fall Finale With Bloody Battle

The Walking Dead sent its die-hard fans off in thrilling, cliff-hanging fashion with its season 3 fall finale, “Made to Suffer.”

Rick (Andrew Lincoln) led a band of rescuers, which included Daryl (Norman Reedus), Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Oscar (Vincent Ward), to Woodbury, where Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) were being held prisoner and tortured by The Governor (David Morissey). Fortunately, Glenn and Maggie were saved. Unfortunately, it wasn’t pretty.

In the ensuing firefight, Oscar was killed and Daryl was captured by the Governor’s men. While the prison crew was shooting it out in the streets, Michonne lurked back to the Governor’s room where she uncovered his zombie daughter, as well as his glass jars filled with “living” zombie heads. The Governor walked in on Michonne and begged her not to kill his undead daughter, but she did it anyway. The two then had their own violent tussle, which ended with Michonne stabbing the Governor in the eye. She would have killed him had Andrea (Laurie Holden) not interrupted and stopped her.

Back at the prison, five strangers entered the prison walls, including one person who had already been bitten by a walker, and Carl (Chandler Riggs) helped them take up residence with the incumbent survivors. Also, Axel (Lew Temple) made a pass at both Beth (Emily Kinney) and Carol (Melissa McBride).

The Governor decided to make the best of the situation and blame the whole fiasco on one of his henchmen, who doubled as Daryl’s estranged brother, Merle (Michael Rooker), saying he had been conspiring with Rick the entire time. The episode concluded with Merle and Daryl, separated since season one, thrown into a death ring to duke it out. The result of the fight, and the fates of the remaining survivors, however, remains a mystery.

The Walking Dead will return with the second half of season 3 when it airs “The Suicide King,” Feb. 10 on AMC.
