SPOILERS: Joss Whedon Reveals Character Bios For New 'S.H.I.E.L.D.'

It was just over a month ago that Avengers director Joss Whedon, 48, revealed that he would create, write and (probably) direct new television pilot S.H.I.E.L.D., which was purchased by ABC, but the hardworking writer and director already has his character sketches worked out for the television project about the top-secret peacekeeping organization.

"It's new characters," he told MTV. "It needs to be its own thing. It needs to be adjacent [to the Marvel Comics Universe], but you don't want to do a show where you're constantly going, 'Iron Man just left, but he was totally here a minute ago.'"

In the interest of such originality, Whedon, who is co-writing the series with his brother and sister-in-law Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, has released the names of a few characters we can expect to follow and, more than likely, fall in love with.

Skye will be a late-20-something who exhibits just about every positive and infectious quality you would want to see in a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent — she is "fun, smart, caring and confident — with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm," reports TV Line.

Agent Grant Ward is "quite the physical specimen" and gets the job done, but not without occasionally displaying "a bit of a temper."

Agent Althea Rice is a weapons expert invaluable to the team, but "her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged."

Agent Leo Fitz and Agent Jemma Simmons are tech and science nerds, respectively, whose sibling-like relationship makes them inseparable and will undoubtedly lead to that one-of-a-kind intimacy dynamic that has come to make Whedon so famous.

Next we just have to wonder who will be cast in the roles. If we know Joss, who is famous for sticking to talent he's previously worked with, it's likely that we'll see some old faces from the Buffy / Angel / Firefly / Dollhouse-verses creeping up.

In addition to writing and creating S.H.I.E.L.D., Whedon has also reportedly signed on to direct the Avengers sequel. His telling of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, starring Amy Acker (Angel, The Cabin in the Woods), Alexis Denisof (Angel), Nathan Fillion (Firefly) and Clark Gregg (Avengers), will hit theaters later this year.
