When writers of the ABC series, Castle, decided to take the tension out of the sexual relationship between main characters Kate Beckett (played by Stana Katic) and Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) after four seasons and more than 80 episodes, they knew they were taking a risk, but a worthwhile one. And creator Andrew Marlowe is sticking to his guns when it comes to the morphing relationship between the new lovebirds
"I think it would be unfair to the audience to have them invest all this time and all this time together only to pull the rug out. I think that was one of the fundamental mistakes they made in Moonlighting. They got them together and then they split them up," Marlowe told Entertainment Weekly, referring to Cybill Shepherd's Maddie Hayes and Bruce Willis' David Addison on the late '80s series.
At the same time, things are about to get real for the couple, incited by bad guy Maddox. "When we left last season, we know that whatever bubble Castle and Beckett wake up in, she's still under active threat," said Marlowe. "And in the last scene, Maddox said, ‘When I have those files, I’m going to put Beckett into the ground.’ And we know he’s close to getting those files. So as is often the case, in a moment of bliss, real life intrudes and the characters have to deal with that and deal with it in a new way, given where they are in the world.”
The direction for the upcoming season five has been established, however. "We'll probably do something different — something a little more personal," Marlowe said.
