With only nine days to go for the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Potter fans have been working themselves into a frenzy not only trying to get tickets to the midnight screening, but also to find out just how similar the movie is to the book.
First off, Director David Yates has announced that moviegoers will have the option of viewing the second part of the series finale in 3D, unlike part one. While we are skeptical, given the recent failed attempts at 3D (Clash of the Titans, The Last Airbender), Yates insists he hasn’t overused the technology. “My own idea about 3D is that it's there to enhance the viewing experience, but I don't think that you have to use it in a tricky way,” he told Moviefone. “I think the minute you sacrifice story and character for something coming out of the screen, I think you've lost it, really.”
Yates also says he has stayed extremely loyal to the book, just as in the first part of the finale. He credits this to the fact that the final movie was split in two. “Because we can spread the whole story into two movies, we're able to address some loose ends that we can tie up as we go,” he said. But Yates admits to having taken some creative liberties with J.K. Rowling’s original text, especially when it comes to the battles. “I felt that in the book and the earlier drafts of the scripts (before we worked them out), there was an opportunity to be had counter-pointing Harry's desperate race for the Horcrux with the Dark Lord's ever-encroaching ability to kill everyone in the school, so there is this race against time.”
There will also be an epilogue at the end of the film, just as in the novel, that takes us 19 years into the future. Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley are shown as happily married, as are Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. And then of course, the final line: “The scar had not pained Harry for 19 years. All was well.”
