Spike Lee has excitedly announced that he’s about to direct his very first musical, which will tell the origin story of Pfizer’s erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
“I Thank My Late Mother For As She Would Say Taking ‘My Narrow,Rusty Behind’ Dragging, Kickin’ And Screamin’ To The Movies When I Wuz A Nappy Headed Kid Growing Up In Da Streets Of Da People’s Republic Of Brooklyn,” Lee wrote in a statement to Deadline. “Thank You Lawdy She Didn’t Listen To My Ongoing Complaints About Musicals. So Finally Going Into My 4th Decade As A Filmmaker I Will Be Directing A DANCIN’,ALL SINGIN’ MUSICAL Spike Lee Joint And I Can’t Wait. My Moms Has Been Waiting TOO!!! And Dats Da Rodgers And Hammerstein Truth, Ruth.”
Aside from Lee, there are several other critically acclaimed artists working on the film. Its songs will be written by Stew Stewart and Heidi Rodewald, who wrote songs for the Tony-awarded musical Passing Strange. Matt Jackson, who also produced award-winning musicals La La Land and Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, will be producing the film through his company, Jackson Pictures, in tandem with Lee’s 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. Since the film is set to be based on David Kushner‘s Esquire article All Rise: The Untold Story of The Guys Who Launched Viagra, Kushner will also be an executive producer.
