Spike Lee and Jordan Peele are teaming up on new film Black Klansmen, based on the true story of an African-American police officer who infiltrated the KKK in 1978.
The film is based on the 2014 book of the same name by Ron Stallworth, a Colorado Springs detective. He answered an ad in the local paper about joining the Klan, and was let in, and he gradually made his way through the ranks to become the head of his local chapter. While undercover, Stallworth gained valuable information that he used to sabotage several of the hate group’s activities.
Stallworth convinced the Klan that he too was a white supremacist via phone or written correspondence. When his presence was required, he hired a white officer to pretend to be him.
Lee is set to direct Black Klansmen as well as produce alongside Peele and Jason Blum. Denzel Washington‘s son John David Washington (Ballers) is being considered for the lead role.
Peele is hot off the heels of his breakout film Get Out, which earned critical acclaim and a whopping 99% on Rottentomatoes. The film grossed over $200 million on a $5 million budget this year. He is also working on a second thriller to be made by Universal Pictures in a first-look deal. Lee’s most recent project include 2015’s Chi-raw and his 2016 documentary Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall. He is also working on a Netflix series based on his own 1986 debut film She’s Gotta Have It.
