‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’ Producers Tease MCU Crossover

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord have hinted at a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) crossover.

“The Multiverse is big and wide. And all things grow,” Miller told the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “Why would you think a Multiverse, in which many things are possible, that [those things are] not related?”

“Everything’s possible except for this one thing that everyone wants,” added Lord.

Miller and Lord even teased the possibility of Spider-Man: No Way Home stars Tom Holland and Zendaya lending their voices to Sony’s animated sequel to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

After Holland and Zendaya expressed interest in making an appearance during the No Way Home press tour, Miller told them to call him. When asked if either actor called, Miller said while trying to dodge the question, “I just got a call right now, but I put it straight forward to voicemail. It’s possibly Zendaya. She’s always calling me. No, it’s this gentleman, Potential. His name is Potential Spam, I believe his name is. He’s so corny.”

Holland said he was even previously asked to make a cameo in the Spider-Verse films, yet he never received a follow-up.

“[Producer] Amy [Pascal] actually asked me on the set of [Spider-Man: No Way Home] and no one has come back to me,” Holland said. “I wanna be in them. Yeah, I love those movies.”

Lord stated that Pascal is the sole source for knowing exactly what is happening in the Spider-Verse “in various forms” which includes the animated and live-action Spider-Man films.

“The writers and director are all buddies of ours, so we sort of have been in the loop as far as what’s going on,” Lord said. “And we are always trying to make sure we’re not stepping on each other’s toes and telling different types of stories, and different themes, and all that stuff, because people want an original story that feels new and interesting. It’s our job to give it to them.

“You’re collectively advancing this humongous mega-story, and you have total control over your little sliver of it. And everything else you just have to communicate as much as possible, make adjustments… It’s almost like a film school exercise where you’re like, ‘Okay, we were gonna do that, but they did it first, so we’re gonna have to do something different.’

“And often that makes you think of something you wouldn’t have thought of otherwise, and it makes your thing better because you’re having to come up with an off-speed pitch, and not do the obvious thing. [Into the Spider-Verse] was like that too. It’s playing off of the canon and that gives you the freedom to do something else.”

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse – Part One, starring Shamiek Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Issa Rae and Oscar Isaac, will swing into theaters October 7.
