Southwest Flight’s Landing Gear Collapses, Leaves 10 Injured At LaGuardia Airport

Southwest Airlines Flight 345, arriving at LaGuardia Airport in New York from Nashville, had its front landing gear collapse after the plane touched down on the runway on Monday.

The plane eventually skidded to a halt, leaving 10 of the passengers injured, reported the New York Daily News. All of the injured were treated at the scene of the accident, six of which were later brought to a hospital for further treatment, according to Port Authority of New York and New Jersey acting director of aviation Thomas Bosco. The six crewmembers aboard the plane were also taken to a nearby hospital to be evaluated.

“The aircraft skidded down the runway on its nose and then veered off and came to rest in the grass area,” Bosco told CNN. The acting director of aviation further stated that the crew had no warning of the impending danger of the landing.

After the ill-fated landing, emergency crews sprayed foam on the nose of the plane to prevent a fire. Able passengers then exited the aircraft via the emergency shoots.

Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.

On July 6, 16 days prior to the landing mishap at LaGuardia, Asiana Flight 214 crash-landed at San Francisco International Airport, resulting in the death of three teenagers and dozens of injuries.
