Southern Pudu Born In Queens Zoo

An endangered southern pudu – the world’s smallest deer – was born in the Queens Zoo in New York City on Monday.

The tiny animal, native to Chile and Argentina, is reportedly just one of about 10,000 pudus in the world – the species is designated "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, according to the Queens Zoo.

The doe, who was born weighing in at just one pound, is still nursing and will grow to live on a diet of “leaves, grain, kale, carrots, and hay,” the Queens Zoo wrote.

The Queens Zoo also stated that pudu normally grow to become one foot in size, and can weigh up to 20 pounds; they also bark when they sense danger. Finally, in addition to being hailed as the cutest animal on the planet, they are also natural jumpers and climbers.
