Sony’s PlayStation Vita may not have enjoyed the most celebrated existence commercially, but it nonetheless has a dedicated fanbase who adore the platform for its strengths. Unfortunately, Vita owners must be warned that Sony is planning to discontinue producing retail games for the handheld.
Kotaku initially reported the story on May 15 when they learned from a Vita developer that Sony’s American and European wings plan to cease all production of Vita GameCards by the end of the 2018 fiscal year, meaning March 31, 2019. Furthermore, Kotaku added how “all Vita product code requests be submitted by June 28, 2018, and that final purchase orders be entered by February 15, 2019.”

Sony confirmed in an email correspondence with both Kotaku and IGN that these reports are correct. However, although physical games will stop production for Sony’s technologically impressive handheld, Sony’s digital storefront will continue to function unfettered, meaning the system’s library will still be readily accessible. Still, while inevitable for all systems, it’s no doubt a shame when support for a platform slows down. If you own a Vita, savor all of the time you have with it.
