Sofia Vergara‘s new show Griselda premiered on Netflix on January 25, in which the Modern Family star plays Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco.

Blanco, nicknamed “Cocaine Godmother,” was a prominent figure in the Colombian drug trade and business in Miami. Blanco had ties to the Medellín Cartel and was known for her vicious reign during the Miami drug world of the 1980s, often hiring hits on people who crossed her, including her husbands. In 2012, Blanco was shot and killed in Medellín, Colombia.

On January 17, Blanco’s youngest son, Michael Corleone Blanco, and his wife filed suit against Vergara and Netflix.

Blanco’s son says that for years, people have approached him to adapt his mother’s story into various forms of media, Netflix included.

According to Michael’s claims, Netflix did not hire him as a consultant during the show’s production. He stated they relied on other accounts rather than the family’s. While the family is not opposed to Blanco’s likeness being used, they did not want Netflix to include her other family members without consulting with them.

Michael’s wife, Marie Blanco, and their attorney, Elysa Galloway, posted a statement on Instagram. The post confirmed the Blanco family has no connection to Griselda.

Last week, Vergara walked the red carpet at the Miami premiere of the series.
