Ahead of Hurricane Milton, influencer Caroline Calloway informed her followers that she wouldn’t evacuate her house in Florida despite it being directly in Milton’s path.
Calloway, 32, rose to popularity on social media as she documented her time at Cambridge University and became one of the first Instagram influencers.
In a now-deleted Instagram story on October 8, Calloway quipped, “So if you’ve been following Hurricane Milton, um, I’m going to die!”
She continued, “It’s supposed to make landfall in the Sarasota-Bradenton area. I’m in Sarasota, I live on the water, it’s zone A, mandatory evacuation.”
Calloway tried to justify her reasons for ignoring the mandatory evacuation: “I can’t drive, first of all. Second of all, the airport is closed. Third of all, the last time I evacuated for a hurricane, I went to my mom’s house in Northport for Hurricane Ian. Her whole street flooded, and we were evacuated after three days without power or running water by the U.S. military.”
She described the ordeal as “Very traumatic.”
“So I don’t want to evacuate to my mom’s house because the last time I did that, it was the worst time ever,” she added.
Calloway said she had prepared for the hurricane with a bathtub full of “backup” water in case of lost electricity and stocked up on food. “It’s kind of scary,” she still admitted and proceeded to present a clip of Tampa Bay Mayor Jane Castor‘s public announcement, “If you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you’re going to die.”
Calloway also announced on X: “I’m not evacuation for the hurricane. I live in Sarasota, on the beach in evacuation zone A. For more great advice, buy my second book! Many comments urged Calloway to get over her pride and evacuate to her mother’s house for a little while in exchange for her life. Some dubbed her “influencer from hell” and “the world’s worst influencer.”
