Rachel Zegler has changed her mind about the original Disney Snow White film after calling the older film “weird” and “sexist.”
Zegler, 23, stars as the titular Disney princess in Disney’s “woke” live-action remake of the classic 1937 animated film, which opened in theaters on March 21. On Good Morning America, she surprised fans by gushing about how honored she was to play Snow White.
The film, which cost Disney $270 million, received mixed reviews and had a scaled-back press tour that fueled rumors of a feud between Zegler and co-star Gal Gadot, who plays the iconic Evil Queen.
“It was the honor of a lifetime; I think every young person dreams about a phone call like that,” Zegler said. “This one is extra special as a huge Disney fan. To bring her to life in such a unique and special way is just a beautiful opportunity, and I’m very honored.”
Zegler spoke about the film’s modern twist, which has been heavily criticized as being “woke” due to tweaks made to the “sexist” romance plot and the replacement of dwarves with CGI; her politics have also added to the backlash.
“It’s all about bridging a classic to a modern age to bring it to these young people,” she said. “[Snow White’s] superpower remains her heart, you know, that’s always been the core of this story, that’s always been the core of the Disney Company.”
Zegler previously called the original movie “sexist” amid the plot revolving around Snow White and Prince Charming, stating that the new film will focus more on Snow White’s journey to be a leader.
