On Thursday, the star of Disney’s live-action Snow White, Rachel Zegler, was forced to apologize for her comments on the results of the 2024 election.
Following the news that Donald Trump had won the election, Zegler posted a statement on Instagram in which she wrote, “May Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace. There is a deep, deep sickness in this country.” She lamented, “another four years of hatred, leaning us towards a world I do not want to live in.”
In response to her comments, MAGA supporters were outraged and called for boycotts of the film. Conservative media personality Megyn Kelly called Zegler “a pig,” declared there to be “something wrong with this person” and insisted Disney reshoot their film with a new lead.
Thursday night, Zegler returned to Instagram with a new message. “Hi everyone, I would like to sincerely apologize for the election post I shared on Instagram last week. I let my emotions get the best of me. Hatred and anger have caused us to move further and further away from peace and understanding, and I am sorry I contributed to the negative discourse,” she wrote. “This week has been emotional for so many of us, but I firmly believe that everyone has the right to their opinion, even when it differs from my own.”
Zegler, 23, concluded, “I am committed to contributing positively towards a better tomorrow.”
Ever since she accepted the title role in the Disney movie, Zegler has received an abundance of hatred from conservatives. When she described the new adaption of the film as a more progressive take on the fairytale last year, right-wing commentators were in an uproar over changes to the classic story.
Zegler is the new movie Snow White as a character who is not dreaming about true love or finding her prince but rather “becoming the leader she knows she can be.” She explained, “People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it’s like, yeah, it is — because it needed that.”
Zegler’s comments that the original movie was outdated and offensive further rubbed traditionalists the wrong way. Republican commentators such as Ben Shapiro and Kelly were quick to attack Zegler’s interview with criticism that woke culture has gone too far, as has Disney’s effort to make “girl boss” stories.
Zegler, who is Hispanic, has also been heavily criticized for landing the role conservatives claim is reserved for an actress whose “skin is white as snow,” per the original fairytale.
Snow White is set to be released in March 2025.
