Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost left his role as a 2024 Paris Olympics correspondent after he endured numerous injuries in Tahiti.
Jost took the role of “Olympics Surfing Correspondent” for NBC’s coverage of the competition in Tahiti. Part of his “reporting” included critical descriptions of his surfing skills and various related ailments, many of which surfers in the tropics commonly acquire.
First, he cut his foot on the reef, then he got a staph infection, and then he got an ear infection. “It’s – it’s a weird feeling when you’re in the medical tent way more than any of the athletes,” Jost told NBC Olympics host Maria Taylor last week. He also noted that “the medical staff, at this point, they know [his] name.”
“They’re very familiar with my badge ID number,” he added. “They know I’m allergic to penicillin. They started saying, ‘We need to see you every day,’ which, at first, I was like, ‘Oh my God, guys, I like you too.’ And they were like, ‘No, it’s because the infection hasn’t improved.'”
“My new goal is to have as many infections as there are Olympic Events,” Jost joked to NBC Olympics grandmaster Mike Tirico.
In a statement, NBC said that Jost’s exit came after an extended stay.
“Colin stayed longer than originally planned,” they stated. “The competition ran long due to the weather. He had a great time, and everyone was thrilled with his coverage from Tahiti.”
Now, with the 2024 Olympic Surfing Semifinals and Finals delayed until August 5 due to small surf, NBC has replaced the comedian with Luke Bradnam, a weatherman from Channel Nine in Australia.
In early 2022, Jost and SNL alum Pete Davidson became co-owners of a $280,000 decommissioned Staten Island ferry boat, intending to turn it into a live entertainment venue.
