‘SNL’ Musical Cold Open Spoofs Trump Indictment

Saturday Night Live opened with a music-themed spoof of former President Donald Trump‘s recent indictment.

Comedian James Austin Johnson portrayed Trump, saying, “It’s me, hi. I’m the problem,” referencing Taylor Swift‘s “Anti-Hero.” “Well, folks, I got indicted. Or as I spell it, indicated.”

Johnson then joked that he would be putting out an album of 30 covers to raise money from his supporters, adding he would need it for “commissary snacks” while in jail.

He then stated that the single “Justice For All,” a charity song by a group of about 20 men imprisoned for their involvement in the January 6 U.S. Capitol attack, was a hit, beating “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus. The real-life profits from the song were used for the legal aid of people incarcerated for the attack.

The skit continued with a string of cameos by other cast members playing known Trump supporters, including Kenan Thompson as boxer Don King, Devon Walker as Afroman and Mikey Day as Donald Trump Jr.

Johnson then asked the audience whether it was ironic that the first time he actually paid someone, authorities tried to send him to jail. This called attention to the hush money Trump allegedly paid porn star Stormy Daniels and other counts of business fraud he committed.

Trump’s indictment is the first time in U.S. history that a president has been criminally charged.

He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon.
