In the new episode of Saturday Night Live, former Rep. George Santos (R-New York) was satirized for his expulsion from Congress.
The skit included a mock press conference and a musical performance.
The cold open started with an announcement about a breaking news press conference from the Capitol delivered by Sarah Sherman’s portrayal of CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.
The scene shifted to Santos, played by Bowen Yang, who called the press conference on the day that followed his expulsion.
Yang’s character stated, “This entire country has been bullying me just because I am a proud gay thief,” a reference to the House Ethics Committee’s discovery last month, which revealed that Santos had unlawfully used campaign funds for personal benefit and deceived donors.
Santos has pleaded not guilty to 23 criminal counts on the allegations that he misled donors, unlawfully received unemployment benefits and charged his donors’ credit cards without authorization.
Santos was expelled from the House in a 311-114-2 vote on Friday.
In the fake press conference, Santos demanded reporters provide their bank routing number, mother’s maiden name and childhood pet name. When asked about his feelings about the expulsion, he declared, “To hell with Congress, I don’t need them anyway. Because my new movie opened this weekend, it’s called Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce.”
The impersonated Santos compared himself to the late Princess Diana and Marilyn Monroe and expressed a desire to sing a “tribute” to himself.
The scene transitioned to Yang at the piano, where he performed a parody of “Candle in the Wind.”
He sang, “It seems to me like I’ve lived my life like a scandal in the wind / Never knowing who to cling to when the law closed in.”
“It seems to me like I’ve lived my life like an evil Forrest Gump / I’m the guy who lied even too much for Donald Trump,” Yang continued.
