SNEAK PEEK: New Joaquin Phoenix Flick, 'The Master,' About Scientology?

Watch out L. Ron Hubbard — there's a new "master" in town. Joaquin Phoenix, who shocked fans with 2010's mockumentary, I'm Still Here, by director Casey Affleck, is back stirring up trouble in the upcoming The Master, a 1950s-set drama about a charming intellectual who starts a religion in America.

The Master, directed by Boogie Nights' and There Will Be Blood's Paul Thomas Anderson and also starring Amy Adams, Philip Seymour Hoffman (as the Hubbard-esque character) and Laura Dern, is rumored to be a religious drama inspired by the rise of The Church of Scientology and founder L. Ron Hubbard.

The first teaser for The Master shows Phoenix being questioned by a military psychologist. "Are you mixed up?" asks the psychologist. "No sir," Phoenix's character — a drifter who becomes Hoffman's right hand man, according to Forbes, answers. "Are you more jumpy than you were before?" he asks. "No sir," Phoenix replies, against the suspenseful audio of guitar slowly strumming the same note. "And how's your sleeping?" Phoenix's response: "I sleep just fine, sir."

The Master is expected to hit theaters on October 12, 2012.
